Lesson 3 · Heal HER

Triggers & Patterns

Understanding what sets you off, why your body responds the way it does, and how to interrupt the cycle in real time.

✦ Heal HER 5 Activities ~55 Minutes Chapter IV

What Is a Trigger?

A trigger is not your enemy. It is a messenger. When something in your present activates an emotional or physical response that feels disproportionate to the moment — that's a trigger. And it always has roots.

The nervous system doesn't know the difference between what's happening now and what happened then. When it detects something that looks, sounds, smells, or feels like the original danger — it sounds the alarm. Your job in this lesson is to learn to recognize the alarm — and eventually, to reassure the part of you that set it off that you are safe now.

A trigger is not a sign that you're broken. It's a sign that something happened to you that was too much to fully process at the time. Your body held it for you. Now you're ready to look at it.

What's Your Dominant Survival Style?

When we feel threatened — emotionally or physically — our nervous system activates one of four survival responses: Fight, Flight, Freeze, or Fawn. Most of us have a dominant pattern. Read each scenario and choose the response that feels most honest. Answer quickly — your first instinct is the truest data.

The gap between reaction and response — however small — is where your freedom lives. Every time you find it, you reclaim a piece of yourself.

Reaction vs. Response

A reaction is automatic — it comes from the wound. A response is intentional — it comes from your healed self. The gap between them is where your power lives. Explore both sides below.

⚡ Reaction
✦ Response
In reaction mode, your past self is driving. She's doing her best — but she's working from old data. She doesn't know that you survived. She doesn't know that you're okay now.
Response is not suppression. It is the pause between stimulus and action — long enough for your healed self to step in and ask: What do I actually want to do here?

Box Breathing

Before you can respond instead of react, you need to create space. Box breathing (4-4-4-4) activates your parasympathetic nervous system — the "rest and digest" state — in as little as 2 minutes. Use this any time you feel a trigger activate. It is the fastest tool you have.

The Trigger Log

Tracking your triggers over time reveals your patterns — what situations, people, or words consistently activate your survival response. Use this log to build that awareness. Over time, you'll see the shape of your nervous system. And that shape is exactly where your healing lives.
